Exynos 1080 Released, Samsung’s First 5nm Chip

Jakarta

Samsung released its newest mid-range system on a chip (SoC), namely Exynos 1080, which is their first SoC using 5nm EUV FinFET technology.

Exynos 1080 comes as the successor of the Exynos 980, and is equipped with an integrated 5G modem. This SoC was launched at an event held in China, as quoted by detikINET from GSM Arena, Friday (11/13/2020).

This SoC uses a triple cluster design, which divides its eight CPU cores into three parts. The 8 cores are divided into four Cortex-A78 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores.

The Cortex-A78 core runs the fastest at 2.8GHz, while the Cortex-A78 in the cluster below has a speed of 2.6GHz. Then for the energy-efficient Cortex-A55 core, it has a speed of 2 GHz. While the GPU is Mali-G78 MP10.

Integrated 5G modem in Exynos 1080 supports both Sub-6 and mmWave standards. Then the cellphone that uses Exynos 1080 can also enjoy LTE Cat.18 speed, both downlink and uplink.

Other supported connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi on all frequencies, and … FM radio.

Camera support on the Exynos 1080 is with a maximum resolution of 200 megapixels for a single camera system, or two 32 megapixel cameras. While the maximum video resolution is 4K 60fps.

Supported RAM chips are LPDDR4x and LPDDR5, as well as UFS 3.1 storage chips. The maximum screen resolution is WQHD + with a refresh rate of 90Hz, or full HD + with a refresh rate of 144Hz.

The first cell phone with a chip Exynos 1080 This is expected to be present in early 2021. Uniquely, at the launch event in China, Samsung said that Vivo was the first mobile phone to use this SoC, just like what was done in the 2019 Exynos 980.
