The Chinese probe Tianwen-1, launched in July 2020 towards Mars, has just provided exceptional images of the red planet. Arrived in orbit around Mars in February 2021, it managed to accomplish its mission: to map the places, which represents more than a thousand gigabytes of data, reports Futura-Sciences this Thursday. The photos unveiled by the Chinese Space Administration (CNSA) are stunning.

As of June 29, Tianwen-1 has completed 1,344 orbits around Mars in 706 days, providing medium-resolution global images of the planet, explains China’s space program on Twitter. This means that astronauts have a complete view of Mars, sometimes with high resolution images.

Canyons, a crater and a volcano
One image shows the Valles Marineris (Mariner’s Valleys) canyon system located near the Martian equator. It is 4,000 km long with depths of up to 7 km, precise Futura-Sciences. The Tianwen-1 probe also obtained images of the Maunder crater, which is one of the deepest on the planet. You can also see the Ascraeus Mons which measures more than 18 km high. The Mariner probe had detected its existence 50 years ago.
The CNSA can also count on images of the South Pole of Mars. It is in this region that a system of subglacial saltwater lakes could be hidden.
