External SSD: Samsung T7 Touch succeeds the excellent T5

Samsung presented on the occasion of CES 2020 the replacement of his excellent T5, a tiny external SSD and USB C that has won over many users. The T7 Touch has the same format as the T5 and its weight is almost identical, with 58 grams on the scale according to its manufacturer. However, it incorporates two major innovations.

The most visible is the addition of a fingerprint sensor directly on the SSD. Thanks to it, the data can be encrypted (AES 256 bits) and only your fingerprint will make it accessible. Up to five different fingerprints can be registered. The device works with specific software, Samsung Portable SSD, compatible with our machines from Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

The other novelty will benefit everyone: the theoretical speeds have been doubled on the T7 compared to the T5. Samsung announces a reading speed of 1.05 Gbit / s and 1 Gbit / s in writing thanks to NVMe and especially to the transition to USB 3.2 Gen 2. These speeds will not be accessible if you connect the SSD to a computer or a tablet with an older standard, but the T7 will work in all cases, and the manufacturer will always provide two cables, including a USB C to USB A.

The T7 Touch will be marketed in January, in two colors (black and silver) and three capacities (500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB). The prices are not communicated by Samsung, but we also know that a simple T7 version will be offered in May. This model will not have the fingerprint sensor and should therefore be more accessible.
