Extensive Drone Attacks on Russian Soil: A Concerning New Trend

Wednesday’s attack is said to have been the most extensive on Russian soil since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have taken down drones in the regions of Bryansk, Oryol, Ryazan, Kaluga and in Moscow, while in Pskov, in the west of the country, a fire reportedly broke out after the airport was hit in a drone attack. Four military aircraft are said to have been damaged.

The British Ministry of Defense states in an intelligence update that 25 individual drone attacks were registered in Russia during August.

– Many of these drones have reached their goals. This probably means that the Russian air defense has problems detecting them, the British write.

Russian authorities have previously moved their military aircraft around after attacks.

The ministry notes that the latest attacks against Soltsy and Pskov have shown that the drones have a significant range, and that makes further dispersal of the aircraft more challenging.

– It is likely that Russia will have to consider providing more air defense systems to airports that they consider to be in the risk zone for drone attacks, writes the ministry.
