A powerful explosion destroyed a large part of a residential building in the town of Turnhout in northern Belgium today, DPA reported.
According to official reports, it is still unclear whether there were any casualties.
One man has been taken to hospital and a woman is currently trapped under a partially demolished building. According to the mayor of the city Paul Van Myrt, quoted by “Het laaste news”, the woman is in good condition and rescuers have established contact with her, BTA reports.
The Belgian news agency Belga reported that eight other people are still missing, but it is unclear whether they were in the building at the time of the blast.
There is still no information about the exact cause of the explosion. “We suspect a gas explosion,” Van Myrt said.
