At least one person died on Tuesday after an explosion at a building in the New York borough of the Bronx caused a major fire and partial collapse of the building.
The Bronx Police Department has confirmed the death of a 77-year-old woman, while two others, ages 68 and 82, are in stable condition, NBC reports.
Five members of the force were poisoned by smoke inhalation and were also taken to hospital.
Eyewitnesses told the channel they heard at least two explosions followed by flames and ash began to fall from the building.
It was first suggested that the cause of the flames could be linked to a gas leak, although the energy company responsible for supplying the building admitted that they had no evidence that this had happened. .
This incident took place less than five kilometers from the area where, earlier this month, another large fire took place, causing the death of 17 people.
