Virginie Brunot, lawyer director of the Industrial Property Litigation Department, will take part in a round table: “ In the Far West of domain names on Thursday, April 6 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The fifteenth edition of International Cybersecurity Forum will be held in Lille on Wednesday 5, Thursday 6 and Friday 7 April 2023.

Thème du FIC 2023 : « In Cloud we trust ? »

The public cloud is the engine of digital transformation. With an adoption rate of only 40% in Europe, the market potential for suppliers and productivity gains for end customers are colossal. However, the choice of a solution cannot be reduced to functional and financial criteria, as this is binding in the long term.

In simple words, the public cloud amounts to “using someone else’s computer” to which organizations entrust not only their information assets but also sometimes their most strategic business processes. Cybersecurity and the trust that can – or cannot – be granted to the operator are therefore essential.

In the Far West of domain names

More than a thousand new internet extensions (nTLDs) have emerged in recent years.

A boon for cybersquatters and attackers who use spoofed domains, or “look-alikes”, to divert web traffic from legitimate sites and launch all sorts of attacks (phishing, spoofing, etc.).

To the point that 75% of internet domains that resemble the domains of large organizations would today be held by third parties (source: CSC). Thus, in July 2022, an unknown person filed 967 .fr domain names imitating known brands or organizations with a German registrar.

Despite the threat, most organizations have yet to implemented security measures existing.
