Explore the Concept of Sleep and its Artistic Representations in Urban Arts Ruhr’s Exhibition 2023

April 24, 2023 Actions & Projects

“Sleep” is a project that “Urban Arts Ruhr” is running from May 5th to June 25th, 2023 as an outdoor exhibition in Essen, Mülheim/Ruhr, Witten and Gelsenkirchen-Erle. “Between flexible working hours, internal clock and the pressure to always be available, sleep as a phase of non-productiveness and non-consumption represents an almost resistive state.

At the same time, even the resting body is measured digitally and optimized through numerous inventions…. The concept of sleep is as multifaceted as the artistic exploration of it… In the south of the Ruhr area, the first mines closed as early as the 1960s. Even then, there was talk of the Ruhr area as a future “sleeping area” in this context. How the transformation of the working world from industrial work to post-industrial forms of work affects our sleep and our bodies can be explored in the cities on the Ruhr…” With contributions by Wojciech Bąkowski, Maximiliane Baumgartner, Cute Community Radio, God’s Entertainment, Michel Gondry’s Home Movie Factory, Healing Complex, Nik Nowak, Katarina Jazbec, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Stephanie Lüning, Melanie Manchot, Photocopy Museum, Yuri Pattison, Joanna Piotrowska, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Alicja Rogalska, Nora Turato, Viron Erol Vert, The Wig.
