Experts Oppose Sun -Dim Discourse for Global Warming Trees

KOMPAS.com – A ‘crazy’ plan designed to cool the Earth’s surface and reduce the impact global warming got opposition from various quarters.

In that plan, Sun we will be deliberately dimmed by spraying chemicals into Earth’s atmosphere.

Citing Science Alert, Tuesday (18/1/2022) the engineering scheme according to more than 60 policy experts and scientists is potentially dangerous.

Even according to them the engineering scheme called Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) these consequences can outweigh any benefits.

“The spread of solar geoengineering cannot be regulated globally in a fair, inclusive and effective manner. We therefore call for political action to prevent normalization of solar geoengineering as a climate policy option,” the researchers wrote in their open letter.

An increase of 1.1 degrees Celsius in the mid-19th century has increased the intensity, frequency and duration of deadly heat waves, droughts, and major storms.

Countries around the world have committed to limiting the rise in Earth’s surface temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, scientists say the threshold could be crossed within a decade.

Meanwhile the failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming has led some policymakers to finally embrace solar geoengineering to buy time, by dimming the Mahatari.

It has long been known that injecting a number of reflective particles into the upper atmosphere can cool the planet.

Nature sometimes does the same. For example, the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines lowered the average temperature of the Earth’s surface for more than a year.

However, the scientists’ open letter said there were several reasons to reject the earth engineering.

Artificially dimming the Sun’s radiative force is likely to disrupt monsoon rains in South Asia and west Africa.

In addition, engineering can damage rainfed crops that are the food source for hundreds of millions of people.

“Stratospheric sulfate injection weakens African and Asian summer monsoons and causes drying in the Amazon,” said the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its latest scientific assessment.

Scientists also worry that if engineering is stopped, the Earth’s surface temperature will increase rapidly.
