When Germany was bounced from the European Championships by England, some focus immediately shifted to which veterans might be walk away from The team for good.
We already saw Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos call it a career. Manchester City’s İlkay Gündoğan is considering it as well. But what about Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller and Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels?
While Hummels has flown under the radar, two prominent figures in Germany football have chimed in on Müller’s future. Bastian Schweinsteiger thinks Müller and Hummels will retire before suiting up under Flick, while Lothar Matthäus is convinced that Müller will move forward and work with Flick:
While both Schweinsteiger and Matthäus could have inside knowledge regarding the future plans for both Müller and Hummels, it is unlikely that either player has decided on what is next.
A more likely scenario is that each will meet with Flick in the coming weeks and map out a plan to go forward or part ways.
Whatever happens, there is no doubt that both players have earned the right to make that decision for themselves.
