Expert Predicts Water Sources on the Moon in the Form of Ice 5 Meters Underground

Astronaut predicted to be able to drink water obtained from the surface of the moon. The reason is, the researchers found several sources air potential that is the impact of volcanic eruptions millions of years ago.

Quoted from Phys, the eruption had a long-lasting impact on the Moon. One of them is the surface of the ice that comes from water vapor due to the eruption.

“Maybe 5 or 10 meters below the surface, you’re going to get a really big ice sheet,” said Paul Hayne, an assistant professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS) and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) University of Colorado Boulder.

Experts came to this conclusion after performing computer simulations to recreate the conditions of the Moon millions of years ago. From these simulations, experts see that the eruption of many volcanoes on the Moon produces large amounts of water vapor.

As a result, at that time there was a silver dew-like effect on the moon’s surface that was visible between the shifts of day to night. Experts also estimate the Moon was once covered in ice as wide as 6,000 square miles.

The majority of the ice sheet is around the Moon’s North and South Poles. However, experts do not yet know the origin of the amount of water. “There are a lot of potential sources right now,” Hayne said.

The findings about the ice sheet on the Moon are also published in The Planetary Science Journal. Still in the same journal, experts suspect 18 quadrillion pounds of volcanic water turned into ice millions of years ago on the Moon.

However, the ice sheet is not easy to find. “We really have to drill into it and find that ice sheet,” Hayne said.

Meanwhile, quoted from sciencefocusThe United States Space Agency (NASA) plans to send astronauts back to the Moon on the Artemis III mission. The delivery is likely to be carried out in 2026 to the South Pole region of the Moon.

The Artemis mission was also carried out to follow up on water findings on the Moon.
