Expert: Corona Virus Can Attack the Digestive Tract

Although primarily a respiratory attack, the corona virus can also irritate the digestive tract.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SLEMAN — Professor of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Prof Wasito said, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, will continue to mutate. This process then gives rise to new variants such as delta and omicron.

Mutations can occur in all countries where Covid-19 has been detected. This bat-derived virus has undergone thousands of mutations in the bat’s body and then transmitted to humans and has now been transmitted between humans.

Wasito explained, the corona virus experienced repeated mutations in bats. That’s what used to cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). At present, the reason for the mutation of thousands of times in the blood circulation and in bat tissue cells is still being sought.

“What is still a mystery, not all bats have corona,” said Wasito in a webinar entitled “Merdeka Covid-19” organized by the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM, Wednesday (30/11).

The corona virus in bats looks different from corona virus large farm animals, poultry, and small animals. Wasito saw it while doing research in 1988.

According to Wasito, initially the virus was not transmitted to humans. However, after many mutations in bats, it finally happened.

The symptoms experienced by animals infected with the corona virus are generally around the respiratory tract. But, there are also not a few cases of corona virus attacks in Indonesia digestive tract animal.
