Expert: Colon cancer is characterized by polyps in the intestine

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Digestive surgeon specialist Siloam Hospitals Kebon Jeruk Dr. dr Wifanto Saditya Jeo SpB KBD said colon cancer is characterized by the presence of small, benign, polyps in the intestine.

“The lump in its development can transform into violent. Other symptoms that can be experienced include defecation (BAB) that causes bleeding, constipation, or diarrhea for no apparent reason. It is also often followed by abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss, “said Wifanto in a media briefing in Jakarta, Saturday.

He added that colon cancer does not only occur in elderly people but also young ones. Therefore, awareness of the dangers of colon cancer needs to be known early on so that it can be prevented and treated quickly and appropriately.

In general, he continued, colon cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon and is characterized by uncontrolled growth of lumps.

“This cancer is at risk of occurring at all ages, both young and old groups. “In the younger age group, usually accompanied by symptoms that are worse,” he added.

Colon cancer is often found in the rectum and sigmoid. This location is 5 to 15 cm above the anus and the growth of cancer at that location interferes with the function of the sphincter muscles that regulate waste removal such as the defecation process.

Various surgical techniques are used to treat cancer and are still being developed to get better results.

One of the newest technologies in treating colon cancer, namely technique Trans-Anal Total Mesorectal Excision (TaTME). The technique is a minimally invasive surgery (minimal invasive surgery) which not only aims to treat appendicitis and gallstones, but is also effective for the treatment of patients with rectal cancer (lower colon).

Generally, rectal cancer surgery requires an incision in the abdomen 10 to 15 cm long and the tumor is removed through a large incision wound, technique Trans-Anal Total Mesorectal Excision only requires an incision of about 1-2 cm. The new technique also allows excised intestinal and tumor specimens to be removed through the anal canal.

The advantages of laparoscopic surgery with techniques Trans-Anal Total Mesorectal Excision is a smaller incision, so the scars and pain experienced are less.

Wifanto explained that this condition made the patient not need large doses of pain medication and reduced the side effects of the drug.

“This technique also minimizes surgical wounds and makes the hospital treatment process shorter,” he said.
