Experiencing severe symptoms, these are the facts of the Omicron RI patient who died

The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) announced that two Omicron patients in Indonesia had died. The Omicron variant is known to have a higher transmission rate than other variants.

“One case was a local transmission, died at the Sari Asih Hospital in Ciputat and the other was a foreign traveler, died at the Sulianti Saroso Hospital,” said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, Dr Siti Nadia Tarmizi.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Health said that the two cases were the first reported fatalities in Indonesia due to the new variant of Omicron.

1. The deceased patient has a history of comorbidities

The Ministry of Health said the two Omicron COVID-19 patients who died had a history of comorbidities.

2. Ministry of Health reveals vaccination status

One of the COVID-19 patients who died, said the spokesperson for the COVID-19 vaccination of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, had been fully vaccinated. While one other patient has not been vaccinated.

“One has been (fully vaccinated) but has several uncontrolled comorbidities. The other has not,” said Dr Nadia when contacted detik.com and written on Sunday (23/1/2022).

“The Omicron patient who died had been vaccinated, he was 64 years old, while the male who had not been vaccinated was 54 years old,” he continued.

3. Patients with severe symptoms

The Ministry of Health stated that the symptoms of COVID-19 that the two patients complained of were in the severe category.

“Severe symptoms (the two COVID-19 patients) complained of shortness of breath,” said Dr. Nadia.

On the other hand, Dr. Nadia said that the two had not been treated in the ICU. However, during the treatment period has received additional oxygen.

“Not yet in the ICU but already using oxygen because the saturation is low,” he continued.

Dr. Nadia previously asked the public, especially the elderly group, to immediately get a booster vaccination to increase antibodies which could decrease after six months of being injected with the complete, two-dose COVID-19 vaccine.
