Expansion in Quebec: Mayrand Food is hungry

Mayrand Food is hungry. The company plans to open approximately six to eight new stores within four to five years. The Quebec region and Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean are notably in the crosshairs of management.

Wednesday, four months late due to COVID-19, the Quebec brand opened on 2e group store, 50,000 square feet in Mail Champlain, in Brossard. About 75 jobs have been created.

This fall, it is in Laval that Mayrand will open its third point of sale of 36,000 square feet and another small one will emerge from the ground in Saint-Jérôme in early 2021. The pandemic has also delayed these openings.

Founded in 1914, the company offers more than 10,000 standard and large format products to restaurateurs, but also to individuals. Management refuses to compare its offer to a Costco store. Rather, it is positioned between the American giant and traditional supermarkets.

“Restaurateurs represent approximately 40% of my business and individuals 60%”, figures Mario Bélanger, president and chief executive officer. “We have been a very well-kept secret for 105 years,” he adds.

To access branches, consumers do not need a membership card. Because of its “purchasing power”, Mayrand says it can offer “unmatched prices”.

In the coming months, management hopes to have announcements for the Quebec region. She mentioned having discussions for two premises.

“Currently, I am shopping at two sites in Quebec,” replies Mr. Bélanger. “In my opinion, we can think that we will open between six and eight new branches within four or five years,” continues the businessman, adding that this scenario is in “an ideal world”, with the end of the pandemic.

Mr. Bélanger would like to make other little ones in Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean, in Sherbrooke, Gatineau, Quebec and Montreal. He says he already has customers, including restaurateurs, in the Capitale-Nationale.

In 2016, Mayrand moved its first store to Anjou, which was located on Metropolitan Boulevard, in Saint-Léonard. The food wholesaler sells in particular cheeses, fruits and vegetables, fish and cold meats. The brand offers around 1000 local products.
