– In addition to Parkinson’s patients, support has been expanded to include people with disabilities and brain lesions to improve their rehabilitation and quality of life.

[충청뉴스 최형순 기자] The Sejong City Welfare Center for the Disabled has been conducting a dance movement therapy program for Parkinson’s disease patients since 2022, and this year, the target audience has been expanded to include people with physical disabilities and brain lesions in addition to Parkinson’s patients, providing support for their rehabilitation and quality of life.

Introduction of ‘dance movement therapy program’ for movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease

The dance movement therapy program conducted at this institution allows students to experience dance as an art based on an understanding of movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease symptoms. The dance experience improves motor function symptoms such as muscle relaxation, balance, posture, and walking through music and dance, improving daily life performance and promoting social solidarity as well as emotional connection among participants.

O-soon Lee, a Parkinson’s patient, said, “My physical strength has improved a lot since participating in the class, and I feel like my body is improving. I would definitely recommend it to those who are willing to undergo rehabilitation,” and Jang O-ja, a disabled person with a brain lesion, said, “I feel like my body is improving.” “At first, it was difficult to follow the movements because I was using muscles I didn’t use before, but now my movements in my shoulders and arms are gradually improving, so I think I participated well in the class.”

Yongsik Yoon, director of the Sejong City Welfare Center for the Disabled, said, “Through the physical activity of dance, we will improve participants’ physical function and increase their will for rehabilitation and provide a venue for exchange that not only improves health but also serves as a support system for each other within the community.”
