Exhibition of the artist Andrejs Prigičevs «Christmas Gold» to be seen in Liepāja / Article / LSM.lv

From December 10, in Liepāja, in the art hall “Civita Nova” of the concert hall “Lielais dzintars”, the exhibition “Christmas gold” by Liepāja artist Andrejs Prigičevs can be seen. The artist, who is known for his miniatures and has so far created provocative works from various toy characters, this time draws attention to the time of Christmas and seemingly incompatible things – the cult of gifts and the Christian message.

At a time when the entrance door of the concert hall “Lielais dzintars” opens only a few days a week and at certain hours, the artist Andrejs Prigičevs offers viewers a different view of the Christmas time – the things and traditions that revolve around it. In each of the small black boxes, just like the dwarves hidden on the TV screen, Christmas presents, romantically snow-covered Christmas trees. Asked what is hidden under the name “Christmas gold”, the artist answers that it is up to everyone to see it.

“There is a bit of irony here, but the viewer, reading the title, will understand what the exhibition ‘revolves around’,” explains the artist.

“Our main goal is no longer to understand the most important event of Christian culture, but to obey the archetypes of the holiday – to receive, tear, stun,” says the artist Andrejs Prigičevs before the opening of the exhibition.

The titles of the works on display in the exhibition reveal the essence of the story, whether it would be “Christmas Eve with the Neighbors” or “Christmas Gold”, several times the figures of dwarfs can also be seen in the exhibition.

“That’s where the gnomes came from, which we regularly exploit with all the ideas and techniques. They also appeared here. The main work is “Christmas gold”, “A couple of peasants are fighting with the bad”, because we have a time of darkness, “Valentine’s wires are burning”, “Pastor Juris puts him in fifth gear”. The exhibition is intended for adults, but these images come from the world of children, nothing much has changed there, ”explains Prigičevs.

Miniature dwarfs, hedgehogs, people or other plastic images do not have to be specially invented, they already exist, the artist combines them and creates a story.

“The content of my works is not ridiculed, blasphemed, humiliated. The picture of each object is a real depiction of several life situations, reconstructing memories, events in which I have been involved as a part of society, which tries to follow the set standards, ”emphasizes the artist. In total, the exhibition will feature about 40 miniatures created by the artist Andrejs Prigičevs, which were previously exhibited in Riga, but have not been shown in Liepāja. New works have also been created that encourage us to think about modern society and each of us.

The exhibition will also feature an opportunity to hear fairy tales read by Liepaja actor Gata Malika.

The exhibition “Christmas Gold” in the art space “Civita Nova” of Liepāja Concert Hall “Lielais dzintars” will be open until January 24.
