According to Laiškalne, the foundation continues the practice of cooperating with regional institutions, providing exhibitions of young artists there, thus promoting the availability of contemporary art in the regional centers of Latvia, as well as promoting the recognition of young and promising artists throughout Latvia. In 2019, an exhibition of Madara Kvēpa’s paintings “Memory of Colors” was organized at the Talsi Cinema, while this week Madara’s latest works of art have arrived at the Valmiera Theater Café Gallery. It replaces Jānis Šneiders’ solo exhibition “Ārā” and the exhibition “Skatiens” will be available for visitors to view during the Valmiera Theater, therefore it is recommended to follow the theater’s repertoire in autumn.

The exhibition features photographs of the artist taken at different times of the season. In the center of photography, as in Madara’s paintings, is nature. Although initially the artist perceived the art of photography and used it as a raw material for her painting practice, Madara later realized that photography is a self-sufficient expression, which is an extension of her gaze on the surface of a work of art. In this extension there is a clearly legible observation of the artist-painter in nature and in the environment. Despite the fact that Madara expands her collection of artistic expressions, it is the elements, motifs or character of the painting that permeate the newly acquired expressions.

Madara Kvēpa (1995) graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts, and is currently studying painting for a Master’s degree. In 2018, he participated in the MVT Summer House project “Sound Needs Art”, together with Intars Busulis (music) interpreting Daina Riņķe’s painting “Our House”. In February 2020, a solo exhibition “Translation” was opened in the gallery LOOK! (Riga), as well as this year is the winner of “SEB Scholarship in Painting 2020 – Agenda”.

The exhibition is available to spectators in the gallery of Valmiera Theater Café during theater performances, when the café is open to spectators.

As Lelentalne emphasizes, taking precautions for the sake of public health safety, the exhibition will not be officially opened with the opening ceremony, therefore the foundation offers the artist a narrative about the development of works of art and their role in artistic activity in video format.

On Sunday, October 11, at 3 pm, the artist of the previous exhibition Jānis Šneiders will lead the creative workshop “Shadow Games”, which will be an exciting lesson for both adults and children, looking at the possibilities of self-created shadow games in creating a visual work of art. You can apply for the lesson by sending an e-mail to [email protected] (participant’s name, surname, age, contact phone).
