Exceptional protest passed Cuba after consultation with Ministry of Culture

The exceptional protest of about 200 musicians, artists, journalists and intellectuals in Havana, Cuba, is over. The protesters drew attention to it fate of fourteen journalists and artists who were arrested on Thursday. The Culture Ministry today pledged to review some of the arrests.

Thirty protesters conferred more than four hours today with Deputy Minister of Culture Rojas. They have agreed to do this more often in the future. The activists also say that Rojas is again considering the arrest of Cuban rapper Denis Solís and another artist. To get Solís released, five activists went on hunger strike earlier.

Not everyone happy

Not all participants in the protest are happy with the outcome of the conversation with Rojas. Some were disappointed that the ministry did not come out with a statement itself, reports Reuters news agency. Others were glad that a meeting had been held with the Deputy Minister.

“It’s a special flame that was lit here today,” said activist Michel Matos, who was at the meeting with Rojas. “I don’t think there has been a similar dialogue at a ministry for the past 60 years.”
