Ex-selected Mario Gómez retires with a goal and promotion

STUTTGART, Germany – Mario Gomez, the former Germany national team forward, announced his retirement from football after scoring a goal in his last game with Stuttgart.

Gomez, who will turn 35 in July, joked that he was negotiating with Real Madrid and Barcelona before saying that he had fulfilled his last wish.

That was to bring Stuttgart’s immediate return to the Bundesliga after a season in the second division.

Stuttgart were second on Sunday, 10 points behind Arminia Bielefeld, despite losing 3-1 at home to Darmstadt.

“It was my last mission for Stuttgart after we embarked on it last year (with the descent), to go back to first,” said Gómez. “My intention is to retire.”

Gomez was one of the most prolific strikers in German football in its prime. He won the Bundesliga title in 2007 in his first cycle with Stuttgart, and two more with Bayern Munich by signing with the Bavarian club in 2009. He formed the Bayern team that conquered the Champions League and completed a treble in the season of 2013.

He went to Italy after that feat to play with Fiorentina. After two seasons in Italy, Gómez joined Besiktas and won the Turkish league in 2016.

Gomez scored 19 goals in 52 games for Wolfsburg before returning to Stuttgart in 2017.

He totaled 170 goals in 328 Bundesliga games, seven in the second division and 26 in 36 German Cup duels.

Gomez also scored 26 goals in 44 Champions League games.

He lost being part of the selection that consecrated champion in the 2014 World Cup due to a season marked by injuries. She signed 31 goals in 78 games with the national team.
