Ex-Nissan chief escapes: Ghosn escaped after shading ended

It’s an escape like a script – the former Renault and Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn towers from Japan towards Lebanon in a night and fog campaign. Shortly before, Ghosn’s shadowing by his former employer ended, insiders report.

After the spectacular escape of former Renault and Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn, more and more details seep through. According to insiders, the 65-year-old left his apartment in Tokyo after a private security company stopped monitoring the former top manager. The company was commissioned by Ghosn’s former employer Nissan. It was her job to find out whether Ghosn was meeting people who were connected with the allegations against him.

Ghosn is on trial in Japan for breach of trust and financial misconduct at Renault partner Nissan. He was released from custody last spring on bail in the millions and was closely monitored during his house arrest. Nevertheless, Ghosn, who is French and Brazilian, as well as Lebanese, was able to flee to Beirut.

A total of three insiders now said that Ghosn’s lawyers had asked the security company commissioned by Nissan to end the surveillance. They accused her of violating Ghosn’s human rights. The former manager had planned a lawsuit against the company. The surveillance was then ended on December 29. On December 31, Ghosn announced his escape to Lebanon.

Speculation about details of the escape

Many of the details of the escape are still unclear. Ghosn has announced a public statement on January 8th. Lebanese media had reported that Ghosn was smuggled out of his apartment in Tokyo after a private concert in an instrument box. The Japanese broadcaster NHK, on the other hand, said on Friday, citing investigative circles, that images from a surveillance camera show how Ghosn had left the house in Tokyo shortly before his escape.

It is unclear how Ghosn managed to board the private jet in Osaka, with which he then flew to Istanbul, from where it went on to Beirut. Passengers also have to go through passport and baggage checks in the private jet terminal, which the manager probably used. Luggage that is too big for the X-ray machines will be opened, said an airport spokesman. It was therefore unlikely that Ghosn had been smuggled on board in this way. “He should have gone through as a passenger, possibly in disguise,” said the spokesman. That would not be the first time: After his release in March, Ghosn tried to sneak past the media in disguise, but was nevertheless recognized.
