Everything you want from a spy thriller

It is a fact that it fulfills its genre to a great extent and leaves nothing to chance. It must be honestly admitted that comparing the book I, the Pilgrim with the works of Frederick Forsyth, John le Carré, let alone Graham Green, fails. Both in the psychology of the characters and, in Green’s in particular, in the literary quality.

On the other hand, the author does nothing at all and in his work are all the reading attributes of a hearty spy thriller. The central figure, an extremely harsh member of the most secret of the American secret services, is, of course, well-educated at the university, physically fit, completely cold-blooded, which does not mean, however, that he is ruthless and without inner life. As befits and bears the disability of childhood (a murdered mother, about whom the listener does not know why and how such a thing happened), she has a complicated relationship with a generous stepfather, whose deep affection he will understand and appreciate as an adult.

An agent with the pseudonym Pilgrim is, of course, attractive to women, but he has no opportunity to attend to them. He also has a deep-rooted humanity, such as an affection for a little boy with Down syndrome. And there is a deep-rooted awareness of former Nazi crimes.

According to customs and rules, it is also appropriate for the agent’s partner to be a different skin color. In this case, he is a hero from September 11, 2001, who, among other things, suffered a disability in a wheelchair from the 67th floor of the burning Twins. Add to that the personal letters of thanks from the President of the USA. After all, Agent Poutník also saved the world from infection by a deadly virus created by the monstrous-genius Arab terrorist Saracen.

From these words it follows as if the audio book I, the Pilgrim were only unbridled pedigree kitsch. However, the truth also has a second face. The whole twenty-nine hours is a problem to break away from the story. Martin Stránský, one of the most prominent and sought-after performers of audiobooks, is responsible for this in the audiobook form.
