In the 100m backstroke heats, Friday morning in Marseille, Mewen Tomac (Amiens Métropole Natation) had managed the time requested to claim a ticket for the Tokyo Games at the end of the first Olympic qualifying phase, which ends this Sunday. But Yohann Ndoye Brouard (Dauphins d’Annecy), who trains at INSEP with Picard coach Michel Chrétien, swam even faster in the final, the same evening, to win in 52”97.
Mewen Tomac (19) had dominated the 100m backstroke heats in 53”10, better than the 53”34 set by the tricolor frame. Better also than his personal best so far (53”29). But only one qualifying place per event is at stake during this first phase and it is therefore Yohann Ndoye Brouard (Dauphins d’Annecy), who also swam below the Olympic minimum in the series, in 53”21, who landed the precious sesame.
Mewen Tomac will have one last chance to qualify for the Tokyo Games at the French Championships in Chartres, scheduled for June 15-20.
