Everything we “know” about the iPhone 13

If Apple continues the tradition of unveiling new iPhones in September, there are only three short months to what we believe will be the iPhone 13 announced at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Or is the IT giant going for the iPhone 12s? We choose to refer to it as “iPhone 13” until the well-known and renowned rumors say otherwise.

So what can we expect from Apple’s next iPhone? This is what the rumor mill says so far.

The article will be updated with new rumors continuously, so save it as a bookmark if you are an Apple fan!

iPhone 13 rumors in brief:

  • Same design as iPhone 12
  • four models
  • better camera
  • still Lightning
  • possibly Touch ID integrated in the screen

Design

With the iPhone 12, Apple went back to the iPhone 4 and 5 era with straight edges rather than a rounded expression we saw from the iPhone 6 and upwards, and perhaps the iPhone 12 series is the most stylish iPhone ever. Of course, it depends on who you ask.

According to the rumor mill, it seems that Apple will continue with the design without major changes for the iPhone 13. The website MacRumors writes that this year’s iPhones will have a similar design as last year’s and that there will be four models – such as the iPhone 12:

  • 5.4-inch iPhone 12
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 12
  • 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro
  • 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max

Bloomberg writes including that Apple views the iPhone 13 as an S version of the iPhone 12.

The biggest change seems to be the camera hack, or bus pocket if you will, which according to the reports is shrinking and becoming smaller than before.

Another small change is that the standard edition may have one different camera setup with the sensors placed diagonally to vertically on the iPhone 12.

Better screen

While the Android world has long embraced mobile screens with faster frame rates, Apple has taken 60 Hz on the iPhone. However, it may seem that 2021 is the year Apple follows its competitors on that front.

Higher refresh rate gives a smoother image when, for example, navigating on a mobile phone or scrolling up and down a web page.

The South Korean the site The Elec reports that two out of four iPhone 13 models will have OLED panels whose refresh rate is 120 Hz, which is on a par with, among others, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and OnePlus 9 Pro.

Camera enhancements

One thing many iPhone users are always excited about is how good the camera is in the new model. The iPhone 12 series is among the best on camera in the mobile industry, and according to rumors, Apple is working on some exciting improvements for the iPhone 13.

Among other things, Apple expert and analyst claims Ming-Chi Kuo that the iPhone 13 Pro models will have an improved ultra-wide-angle lens with an aperture of f / 1.8, which allows for better results in dark environments than today’s f / 2.4 sensor.

In addition, rumors suggest that autofocus will also be improved.

According to Max Weinbach, one of the rumors, the camera modules will not be completely flat, but will protrude less from the chassis than is the case with the iPhone 12. The same person claims that the iPhone 13 will support astrophotography for better images of the sky.

The mode is reportedly activated automatically when you point the iPhone 13 camera at the sky and it should be able to recognize, among other things, the moon and the star and automatically adjust the aperture accordingly.

Processor …

Otherwise under the hood, it is expected that the iPhone 13 will come with a new and more powerful processor, presumably called the A15.

Apple makes its own processors with a company called Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC).

Still not USB-C

Hope is fading for those who want an iPhone with a USB-C connector. The rest of the mobile industry has long gone for USB-C, and Apple uses the standard in both the MacBook and iPad Pro.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo does not want Apple to switch to USB-C on the iPhone since it is an open standard and that it is less waterproof than Lightning and MagSafe. In addition, it will affect Apple’s Made for iPhone investment (MFi).

In other words, it is most likely that Apple will continue with Lightning in the iPhone 13 and that it will continue like this until a contactless iPhone sees the light of day.

Face ID eller Touch ID?

iPhone X was the first iPhone with Face ID, with 3D face recognition in front of the finger sensor Touch ID. Face ID has its advantages, but also some disadvantages that, among other things, face mask users have experienced during the pandemic.

Companies such as OnePlus and Samsung have models with the finger sensor placed under the screen, and if we are to believe Bloomberg, this is something that Apple is also considering. The website writes that Apple is testing a Touch ID that is integrated in the screen.

Finger sensors are mainly available in two types: optical and ultrasonic. The latter uses sound waves to create a 3D map of the fingerprint and is known to be more secure than the optical one.

According to rumors, it is not entirely clear which technology Apple will use.
