History: What happened on July 2nd?

2021 – Norbert Himmler becomes the next ZDF director. The television council of the public broadcaster elects the 50-year-old in Mainz in the third ballot to succeed Thomas Bellut (66), who had not run for another term. Himmler will take office in March 2022.

2012 – Kosovo is granted full sovereignty as the youngest country in Europe. The majority of the EU countries as well as the USA and Turkey decide this in Vienna.

2002 – American adventurer Steve Fossett became the first person to circumnavigate the world in a solo balloon flight. After more than 31,200 kilometers he crosses the “finish line”, the 117th degree of longitude above western Australia.

1992 – The UN opens an airlift to Serb-held Bosnian capital Sarajevo. This is discontinued in January 1996 after three and a half years and around 13,000 flights.

1962 – The first Wal-Mart store (later Walmart) opens in Rogers, Arkansas. The company’s name derives from its founder Sam Walton (Walton’s Mart).

1962 – After only three months in office, Federal Public Prosecutor Wolfgang Fränkel has to resign after allegations about his activities during the Nazi era. Information circulated from the GDR showed that during his years at the Reich Prosecutor’s Office in Leipzig between 1936 and 1943, Fränkel had worked towards dozens of death sentences by appealing for annulment.

1955 – The zoo is opened in East Berlin as the GDR counterpart to the zoo in West Berlin. The 160-hectare facility was built on the site of the former Friedrichsfelde Palace Park.

1865 – In the East End of London, clergyman William Booth decides to found a Christian Mission, which in 1878 is renamed the Salvation Army.

1839 – Africans kidnapped from their homeland take control of the Spanish slave ship “La Amistad” and kill most of the crew. In a spectacular trial, the rebels are later acquitted of the charges of mutiny and murder in the USA and are able to return to Africa.
