Evan Rachel Wood Says Marilyn Manson Raped Her on the Set of ‘Heart-Shaped Glasses’ Music Video

Evan Rachel Wood has given new details about the abuse she suffered from Marilyn Manson. The actress has explained that the musician raped her in front of the camera during the filming of the video clip Heart-Shaped Glasses in 2007.

The Hollywood star explores his relationship with Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, in the new documentary Phoenix Rising, which premiered on Sunday, January 23 at the Sundance Film Festival.

Wood maintains that Manson abused her “for years”. The actress of the series Westworld and the singer started dating in 2006 when she was 18 and he was 38 and they had a romantic relationship until 2011.

in the video clip Heart-Shaped Glasses, from Manson’s sixth studio album, Eat Me, Drink Me, the rock musician gave Wood sunglasses identical to those seen on the movie poster Lolita by Stanley Kubrick from 1962, which is about a man who becomes sexually obsessed with an underage girl.

The video shows Manson having sex with Wood while the pair are drenched in fake blood. “It was nothing like what I thought it was going to be,” Wood recounts in the documentary. “We did things that were not what they proposed to me. We talked about a simulated sex scene, but once the cameras started rolling, he started to really penetrate me. I had never agreed to that… It was complete chaos.”

“I didn’t feel safe,” she continues. “Nobody took care of me. It was a really traumatic experience filming the video. I felt disgusting and that I had done something shameful, and I realized that the film crew was uncomfortable and no one knew what to do.” Evan Rachel Wood confirms in the documentary that she was “forced to perform a commercial sex act under false pretenses.” “That’s when the first crime was committed against me,” he says. “I was basically raped on camera.”

According to the documentary, Manson later pressured Wood to tell reporters that there had been no actual sex during the video shoot. Wood explains that the rocker was clear about what he should say about what happened during the recording of the video: “I was supposed to tell people that we had this great romantic time and none of it was true. But he was afraid of doing something that would upset Brian in any way. The video was just the beginning of the violence that would continue to escalate throughout the relationship.”

Wood’s mother recalls hearing from a crew member that Manson was giving Wood absinthe liqueur “and whatever else,” and that she was in no condition to consent when he went off script. .

“We talked about a simulated sex scene, but once the cameras started rolling, he started to really penetrate me. I had never agreed to that… It was complete chaos.”

The musician’s lawyer, Howard King, denied the accusation in a statement sent to AFP. “Of all the false accusations Evan Rachel Wood has made about Brian Warner, her imaginary retelling of the video shoot of Heart-Shaped Glasses 15 years ago is the most blatant and easiest to refute because there were multiple witnesses,” he wrote. King said Wood was “fully consistent” during the three-day shoot and “deeply involved in pre- and post-production planning for the clip.” “The simulated sex scene required several hours of filming with various takes using different angles and long pauses between cameras. “Brian did not have sex with Evan on that set, and she knows that to be the truth.”

In various interviews over the years, Wood considered herself a survivor of domestic abuse and sexual assault, but it wasn’t until February 2021 that she publicly accused Marilyn Manson. “My abuser’s name is Brian Warner, known to the world as Marilyn Manson,” she wrote in a post on Instagram. “He started pedophile manipulation on me when I was a teenager and horribly abused me for years.”

In a 2009 interview, conducted shortly after his breakup with Wood, Manson claimed that he called Wood 158 times while he was self-mutilating and then blamed her for it. “I wanted to show him the pain he put me through,” Manson stated at the time. “It was like, ‘I want you to physically see what you’ve done.'” In the same interview, the artist assured that he had fantasies “every day about breaking the skull [de Wood] with a mallet.”

On the same day that Wood shared her allegations, four other women accused Manson of mental, physical and emotional abuse, and sexual and physical violence. Now more than 12 women have accused him of abuse, including the actress of Game of Thrones, Esme Bianco.

Manson has always denied all allegations of abuse, calling them “horrible distortions of reality.” Los Angeles police confirmed last year that they were investigating allegations of domestic violence against the singer.

Since the accusations were made public, Manson has parted ways with his record label Loma Vista Recordings and the Hollywood agency CAA, but continues to record music and last year participated in the album Donda de Kanye West.

The documentary Phoenix Rising gives voice to Wood and other victims of sexual abuse to achieve an extension of the statute of limitations for these crimes and more time to seek justice after the abuse. The first of two Phoenix Rising parts is airing in its entirety this year on HBO. Elsewhere in the documentary, Wood stated that Manson had an “obsession” with Hitler and called the Nazi leader “the first rock star.”
