evacuation of the rue de la Commune squat, otherwise known as the “alternative neighborhood house”

In Rezé near Nantes, the large property at 53 rue de la Commune had been illegally occupied for several months. Its five inhabitants lived under the threat of expulsion since December 2019. This Monday morning the threat became reality. The policemen in number – eight vehicles – evacuated what the defenders of the place called the “alternative neighborhood house”. About fifty people came to give their support.

Among those deported, there is Cisco:

I came to live here because I have no accommodation. I have a single RSA for single at 500 € per month, but I have two daughters, including a teenager who I babysit every other week and I can’t find – Cisco

The 1000 square meters of 53 rue de la Commune have been transformed without authorization into a collective living space, with common spaces welcoming artists and residents of the neighborhood. A festival was held there this summer. The town hall does not validate the illegal occupation. On the other hand, it is entirely in favor of the existence of such places that create social links. Assistant Claire Guiu:

The dynamics generated by this place are of great interest to us. We want Pont Rousseau to become once again a place of life and a place of civic engagement – the deputy mayor of Rez

The town hall of Rezé has taken steps to buy 53 rue de la Commune. She already owns several plots in the islet. By mid-afternoon, she still had not been asked for temporary relocation.
