Belgium Grapples With Projected €25.5 Billion Budget Deficit in 2025
Brussels – Belgium is facing significant budgetary challenges as it heads into 2025,with projections indicating a federal budget deficit of €25.5 billion, equivalent to 4% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) [1]. This figure comes from official budget documents submitted by the De Wever government.
The federal government’s budget for 2025 allocates €174 billion for its operations and social security. However, total expenditure is projected to reach just under €200 billion, resulting in the ample deficit.
Defense Spending and the Deficit
Even when excluding increased defense expenditure, which the government aims to keep outside the standard budget calculations through an escape clause with the European Commission, the deficit remains high at €22.7 billion. This represents a considerable increase from the previous year, when the federal deficit stood at €17 billion.
Budgetary Ambitions and Reform
These figures suggest that Belgium is struggling to meet its budgetary targets. The De Wever government previously agreed on a national budgetary plan for the medium term
to demonstrate to the European Commission how the country intends to manage its budget deficit. without intervention, the deficit was projected to climb to €43 billion by 2029.
The plan reiterated the goal of reducing the deficit to 3% by 2029. However, the newly submitted budget estimates the deficit for that year at 3.5% of GDP based on federal figures alone, and 3.7% when including defense measures. these figures do not account for the budget deficits of other regional authorities.
The Role of Reforms
The success of these budgetary ambitions hinges on the successful implementation of reforms proposed by the De Wever government. These include measures such as limiting unemployment benefits, pension reforms, and tax reforms designed to stimulate job creation.
Political Reactions
The budget has already drawn criticism from political opponents. Open VLD MPs Vincent van Quickenborne and Alexia Bertrand responded to the budget with the following statement:
This is no longer the result of the Vivaldi government. These are Arizona’s own policy choices. All the extra for defense would be compensated, the budget would be put in order. But with their first budget they just do the opposite.Open VLD MPs Vincent van Quickenborne and Alexia Bertrand
