Eurostat: Bulgarians have too few cars





Only in our country a decrease in the number of registered cars between 2015 and 2019.

Bulgaria is among the countries with the fewest passenger cars in Europe. In 2019, there were 407 cars per 1,000 people in Bulgaria, according to Eurostat statistics.

Only Hungary (390), Latvia (381) and Romania (357) have fewer cars.

The leader in the ranking is Luxembourg with 681 passenger cars per 1,000 people. However, these data may be influenced by cross-border workers, ie. non-residents who use cars registered in Luxembourg, specify the European Statistical Office.

In second place is Italy with 663 cars per 1,000 people. Cyprus (645) and Finland and Poland (642 each) follow.

At the same time, several member states report a significant share of old passenger cars – 20 years old and older. This share is the largest in Poland (37.9%). Followed by Estonia (31.5%), Finland (26.9%) and Lithuania (22.6%).

The newest cars drive in Ireland – 28.8 percent are under 2 years old. Followed by Luxembourg, Belgium and Denmark.

Bulgaria has not provided data on European statistics on the age of cars, but only on the total number of cars. But the official statistics in our country show that by the end of 2020, cars over the age of 20 are 48% of all cars. Cars over the age of 15 are over 70%.

In recent years, a number of countries have offered programs to support the purchase of new low-emission cars, while scrapping old owners’ cars to renew the fleet with greener vehicles, Eurostat recalls, noting that such programs exist in almost half of the countries. Member States.

Bulgaria is the only country that marked a decline in registered cars between 2015 and 2019. It is 11%, and the total number of cars in Bulgaria is about 2.83 million.

The largest increase in the number of cars was in Romania (by 34%), followed by Lithuania (20%) and Hungary (19%).
