The European Union will launch a military operation against Yemen’s Houthis to ensure safe commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The corresponding decision was made by the EU foreign ministers, writes Bild. In particular, Germany has already sent the frigate Hesse to the shores of Yemen, with about 250 Bundeswehr soldiers on board.
The role of the Houthis in the aggravation of the situation in the Middle East
Yemen’s Houthis, after the start of Israel’s military operation against Hamas, supported the militants of this movement. Beginning in November 2023, Iran-backed Houthi rebels began attacking shipping passing through the Red Sea. At first, only ships associated with Israel were attacked, but subsequently ships from other countries, including American ones, were also targeted. Let us remind you that the sea route through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea is the shortest route between Europe and Asia.
On February 1, it became known that tankers with Russian oil continue to sail through the Red Sea without encountering obstacles from the Houthis.
On February 2, Yemen’s Houthis threatened to destroy a fiber optic cable in the Red Sea if Britain and the United States continued to attack Yemen’s airports.
