2020 is very turbulent in terms of car sales in Europe. At the beginning of the year, sales were unmatched, which she subsequently confirmed pandemic coronavirus, as a result of which registrations fell sharply. According to statistics from the analytical company JATO Dynamics, this was a year-on-year increase again in September, by a slight 1.2%, but the main event of the month is elsewhere.
JATO Dynamics statistics show that in terms of European sales (the company monitors sales in 27 European countries), electrified cars outperformed those powered by a diesel engine for the first time. And although this result is strongly influenced by the fact that JATO includes not only electric cars, plug-in hybrids and full-hybrids among the so-called electrified cars, but also mild hybrids, the number of which is growing strongly, the trend is unquestionable. After all, five years ago, oil was dominant in the old continent, after dieselgate case however, there was a departure from her.
As a result, diesel cars in Europe accounted for only 24.8% of the market in September, up from half the market ten years ago. “The shift from internal combustion engines to electric motors has occurred. Although largely driven by various government incentives, customers are ready to embrace these new technologies. ” says JATO Dynamics global analyst Felipe Munoz about the results.

Volkswagen’s largest carmaker, Volkswagen, registered 40,300 electrified vehicles in Europe in September, making it the second largest seller of such cars after Toyota. However, while the Japanese carmaker primarily relies on full-hybrids, the German carmaker combines mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars.
By the way, the newly introduced Volkswagen ID.3 has 7,897 registrations on its account in September, the first month of official sales, making it the third most sought-after electric car in Europe. Only Tesla Model 3 and Renault Zoe did better.
Interesting results for September can also be found in the order of models. After the arrival of the new, eighth generation, Volkswagen Golf has once again firmly established itself at the top of the standings. The second time, thanks to strong sales of the Vauxhall sibling, was the Opel Corsa, whose 26,269 registrations were almost within Golf’s reach. The fifth place of the Mercedes A will also surprise, thanks to which it has become the second best-selling compact in Europe. The top ten models are then closed by the Škoda Octavia with 18,240 registrations.
