European Leagues discuss reform of Champions League

The main European Leagues are organizing an online meeting this Friday to discuss UEFA’s plans to change the format of the Champions League with a major overhaul of the group stage on the agenda.

– –

UEFA wants this group stage (eight of four clubs with each team playing three opponents at home and away) to be abandoned and replaced with a format in which the 32 clubs would play 10 different opponents, in a single board.

– –

No major resistance

The European body thus hopes, with more matches, to generate higher income and arouse greater interest from supporters.

– –

This reform has not yet encountered any major resistance and has been notably supported by the boss of the European Club Association, Andrea Agnelli, the president of Juventus Turin.

– –

For their part, the Leagues will ensure that any expansion of European competitions does not encroach on domestic football, making it clear that they will not accept Champions League fixtures on weekends.
