The bitter opening defeat against the Barcelona Dragons was followed by an appealing performance by Stuttgart Surge – but they were also unable to win against the Panthers from Breslau under the television tower. But it was damn close.

The Panthers bit twice shortly before the end: Two touchdowns by the big cats from Breslau (Wroclaw) shortly before the end of the game cost Stuttgart Surge their first win of the season in the European League of Football (ELF). The team of head coach Martin Hanselmann lost to the club from Poland in the Gazi Stadium on Sunday 25:28 (3:9, 9:6, 7:0, 6:13) – the touchdowns of wide receiver Malik Stanley six minutes before the end and Ball catcher Jakub Mazan 1:33 minutes before the final siren turned the game around. Paul Steigerwald’s touchdown 21 seconds before the end was only a cosmetic result. A week earlier, Surge had clearly lost against the Dragons from Barcelona under the television tower by 9:38.

On the second day of play, Stuttgart Surge welcomed the Panthers Wroclaw, who had started the season by beating the Leipzig Kings. The hosts had chances in the first quarter, but only a field goal by Jonata Loria resulted in three points on the scoreboard, and the Poles were 9:3 ahead. In the second quarter, the Stuttgarters got off to a strong start. Receiver Moritz Riedinger initially distinguished himself with some great catches and running back Janis Hackenberg completed the play with the first touchdown to make it 9:9, the kick for the extra point went wrong. After that, the defensive lines dominated the game, little happened on either side. Still: A field goal by Jonata Loria gave Surge the lead, but the Panthers were able to respond with a clean and quick play, which they completed with a touchdown to make it 15:12.

In the third quarter, both offensive lines continued to struggle and little happened, but shortly before the end of the quarter, Surge quarterback Randy Schroeder found cornerback Benjamin Barnes, who had been called up on offense, with a pass and the home side were ahead 19:15. In the final quarter, the Stuttgart fans did everything they could to support their team – but it was no use. The Panthers became more and more dangerous and again proved their comeback qualities, they decided the game with two touchdowns. All in all, Stuttgart Surge showed itself to be much improved compared to the match against the Dragons and so the team is looking forward to the next two games against Austrian teams with optimism. Next Sunday Stuttgart will play the Vikings in Vienna, on June 26 the Tirol Raiders from Innsbruck will be guests at the Waldau.
