European Health Insurance Card ... what is it for?

The European Health Insurance Card (CESD) allows a person insured or covered by a social protection scheme in one of the 28 Member States of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland to obtain from public care providers the medical assistance that your state of health requires during your temporary stay in any of the states referred to.

Health care is provided to CESD holders in the same way as to beneficiaries of the Social Security system in the country where they are located, which means that this care may not be free of charge and that there may be the payment of moderating fees or co-payments (non-refundable).

It is a free, personal and non-transferable card and it was designed to simplify the identification of its holder and the institution that is financially responsible for the health care costs that it may need.

The card takes about five working days to be sent to the holder's address, so please make your request in time. Has athree-year validity, ends which you must place the order again, as it does not renew automatically.

Beneficiaries of Social Security who have a Social Security Identification Number, can request CESD in Social Security Direct, with a password or Citizen Card to access the service. To do so, simply access on here. Then just go to Illness> Obtaining a European Health Insurance Card.
