The ECA forecasts that clubs in 55 countries will lose € 1.6 billion this season and € 2.4 billion next season.

The mainland club umbrella organization estimates that out of the ten leagues studied, including the English, Italian, German, Spanish and French championships, the losses could be € 3.6 billion, of which € 1.5 billion is for unsold tickets.

Seven of the ten leagues surveyed have resumed or finished national championships, while France, the Netherlands and Scotland have stopped their tournaments altogether. Loss of profits is also predicted from unsold television rights, and it is not known when spectators will return to the stadiums.

“As far as we’ve found, Covid-19 has caused a seismic shock even in the leagues where the season continued. The financial consequences will not diminish if the championships resume. It will continue next season, so we should make football a sustainable industry,” said ECA President Charlie. Marshall.

The ECA has also analyzed that the pay / income ratio will increase in 2021. Last year they were 59.6%, but next year they will increase to 70.1%, which is 7.2% more than in the scenario if there was no coronavirus pandemic.

The ECA emphasizes that the situation will be even worse in leagues where costs far outweigh incomes.
