European borders may re-close due to pandemic

Borders in Europe may be re-closed due to coronavirus. This option is possible in the event of a sharp increase in the number of infected in a particular EU country, said German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, reports DW.

He specified that these decisions should be coordinated and go through the voting procedure at the EU level.

Recall, from May, the borders within the European Union and the Schengen area are gradually opening. It is planned that in July restrictions on entry into the EU for arrivals from South Korea and New Zealand can be lifted. Tourists from Russia, the USA and Brazil will receive permission to enter only in exceptional cases. The reason for the ban on entry or permission will be the number of cases of COVID-19 infection in the country of departure over the past two weeks – there should be 16 or less cases per 100 thousand inhabitants.

We add that from July 1, Germany presides in the European Union. Germany previously outlined its main goals – an agreement on a program of assistance to the economy of the EU countries until 2027, negotiations on Brexit and a clear positioning of the EU in competitive relations with the United States, China and Russia.
