Europe Dominates Day Two of Ryder Cup, Securing Commanding 11-4 Lead
BETHPAGE, NY – Europe surged to a commanding 11-4 lead over teh United States at the Ryder cup on Saturday, capitalizing on strong performances in both the morning and afternoon fourballs sessions. A dominant showing, punctuated by victories from pairings like Rose and Fleetwood over Scheffler and DeChambeau (3&2), and McIlroy and Fleetwood against English and Morikawa, has positioned the European team on the brink of victory heading into Sunday’s singles matches.
This decisive shift in momentum marks a notable turning point in the competition. the United States, heavily favored coming into the event, now face an uphill battle to retain the Ryder Cup. Europe needs 5.5 points from the 12 singles matches to secure the win, while the US team must mount a historic comeback – the largest in Ryder Cup history – to overcome the seven-point deficit. The outcome will determine which team lifts the coveted trophy and bragging rights for the next two years.
Scottie Scheffler, the world No 1, has struggled throughout the Ryder Cup. He lost his Saturday morning fourballs match with Russell Henley to Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland by a single hole, adding to his disappointing performance. Rahm and Hatton continued their success in foursomes, defeating Schauffele and Cantlay.
The final match of the day saw Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay narrowly defeated by Hatton and Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick sealed the victory with a remarkable approach from a fairway bunker, contributing to Europe’s 3-1 session win.
A late concern emerged for the European team as Viktor Hovland, who was scheduled to partner Fitzpatrick in the afternoon, experienced a flare-up of a recent neck injury. Shoudl hovland be unable to compete in the singles, a player from both sides would be removed, and a half-point would be awarded, perhaps bringing Europe closer to victory. Despite the potential disruption, European captain Luke Donald and his team remain focused, and are not relying on concessions given the challenging atmosphere from the galleries.
