EU Foreign Minister: 150,000 Russian troops at Ukraine’s border and in Crimea

The situation in Ukraine and the EU’s tense relations with Russia were a major topic when the union’s foreign ministers met for an informal video meeting on Monday.

– There are over 150,000 soldiers at the border and on the Crimean peninsula. It is the largest deployment ever by Russian forces on the border with Ukraine. The risk of further escalation is obvious. We urge Russia to step down and reduce tensions, says EU Foreign Minister Josep Borrell after the Foreign Ministers’ meeting.

He applauds Ukraine for showing restraint so far.

The EU promises that they are united behind Ukraine, but it was not expected that this would be expressed in concrete action.

Ukraine wants a new package of sanctions, but this is not yet something that has been discussed in the EU.

– I proposed a plan, step by step, for how Russia should be deterred from further escalation. The key is to prepare for new sanctions against various sectors, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote on Twitter after speaking to his EU colleagues on Monday.
