EU and UK resume negotiations on Brexit | NOW

The United Kingdom and the European Union will resume negotiations on Brexit on Thursday evening. British chief negotiator David Frost announced this on Wednesday, after a telephone conversation with EU negotiator Michel Barnier.

“We have agreed that there is again a basis for negotiations with the EU,” Frost said on Twitter on Wednesday. “We will have intensive talks every day and these will start tomorrow afternoon, October 22, in London.”

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a separate statement that there is no guarantee of success, but that a deal is the best option.

The spokesman added that it is certainly possible that the negotiations will not succeed. “If that is the case, the United Kingdom will end the transition period (which ends on December 31, 2020, ed.) And continue with conditions that are equal to and benefit from the trade conditions with Australia.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Charles Michel, president of the European Council, said the EU is ready to return to the negotiating table. Michel thus responded to statements by Johnson last Friday, in which the British Prime Minister stated that negotiations no longer make sense. According to him, this was because the EU had not taken the negotiations seriously for months.
