EU and UK nothing progress with new Brexit talks | NOW

A new round of consultations between the EU and the United Kingdom on their future relationship has failed. European negotiator Michel Barnier says the parties broke up in Brussels on Friday without achieving any significant results.

The EU and the UK have spent the past five days trying to agree on the situation after the upcoming turn of the year. Then the transition period that has been in force since Britain’s departure from the European Union in January ends.

Barnier blames the British representation for this. He would have put his heels in the sand during the conversations. British negotiator David Frost says that not the British have stepped on the brakes in the talks. He says he still believes that the parties will come out.

Because the UK is no longer part of the EU, new agreements have to be made on all kinds of matters. This concerns trade issues and transport to energy and security. The main issues are fishing quotas and state aid rules for businesses.

Currently, a so-called transition period still applies, in which all regulations actually remain the same. When that period ends without new trade agreements being made, there is still a risk of a ‘hard Brexit’ that could lead to chaos.

The next consultation round is from 7 to 11 September. Talks are also scheduled for the week of September 28.
