Lavrov said Moscow had “no illusions” about the prospect of “Russophobic sentiment” within the EU dissipating in the near future.
“Russia will closely follow all concrete steps taken by the bloc and its candidate countries,” he said in a possible reference to Ukraine, which was granted candidate status by the European Union on Thursday.

“Hitler gathered a significant part, if not most, of the European countries under his banner for the war against the Soviet Union,” the foreign minister added.

Lavrov’s remarks came just one day after he branded a proposal to form an international naval coalition to escort ships carrying Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea in an attempt to meddle in the United Nations auspices.
“Such a scheme is not needed to facilitate Ukrainian grain exports,” he said, adding that Moscow guaranteed the safety of ships reaching the Bosphorus Strait, the main access point for the Black Sea controlled by Turkey.
