Estrela de Fura: World’s Largest and Most Expensive Ruby Sold for $34.8 Million at Sotheby’s Auction

KOMPAS.com – The 55.22-carat gemstone called “Estrela de Fura” is the largest known ruby or ruby in the world. Besides its size, the stone broke another record when it sold for $34.8 million at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Auction.

This price surpassed the previous ruby auction record, which was 30.3 million USD or Rp. 451 billion for the 25.59 carat “Sunrise Ruby” in May 2015.

However, the purchase of “Estrela de Fura” is considered more profitable for the buyer because if calculated by weight, the price is around Rp. 7.9 billion per carat, while “Sunrise Ruby” costs around Rp. 17.6 billion per carat.

Described by Sotheby’s, the stone is an “extremely rare” breed and is “precious” because of its colour, brilliance and size.

A ruby or ruby named Estrela de Fura sold for $34.8 million or around Rp.518 billion at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Auction.

“Estrela de Fura” was discovered in Mozambique by the Canadian company Fura Gems. Its name means “Fura Star” in Portuguese, referring to its status as Fura’s most important discovery.

When it was found in its raw state before being honed and polished, experts immediately recognized that “Estrela de Fura” was unlike any other ruby. The stone has a deep red color known as the “pigeon blood” color, a hue found only in select Burmese rubies.

Initially, this ruby was expected to sell for around IDR 450 billion. On the market rubies of this size are few and far between, and only two previous sales of rubies have exceeded IDR 225 billion. “Nature shaped it for us,” Sotheby’s said in a video release before the auction.

“Estrela de Fura” isn’t the only gemstone to break records at the recent Magnificent Jewels auction.

Another 10.57 carat pink gem nicknamed “The Eternal Pink” also sold for Rp 518 billion. Overall sales at the Magnificent Jewels Auction reached US$95.9 million or around Rp.1.43 trillion, making this auction the best-selling jewelery auction held at Sotheby’s New York.
