Estonian Kadriya for his work in the maritime police and life on the exotic islands of Turks and Caicos

Kadri Kullerkupa, an Estonian, has lived on the exotic islands of Turks and Caicos for 20 years. Most recently, she decided to make a radical change in her life and became the first woman to get a permanent job in the national maritime police.

Kadrija has spent most of her life abroad: in Egypt, Italy, Spain and ASV. After a diving instructor course in the United States, she was offered a job in the Turks and Caicos Islands – British overseas territory, which consists of dozens of large and small islands. Unofficially, these islands are included in the Caribbean, although they have no geographical connection to the sea, “Eesti Ekspress“.

“I think I’ll be working there for a year, but in the end it’s been 20 years.”

For the last 15 years, Kadrija has worked as a captain – first in diving boats, then on charter voyages.

“Even before the coronavirus pandemic, I decided to leave tourism. I started to think where else I could be useful. I’ve always wanted to find a job that can benefit society. Until then, I worked in the fire department. I didn’t want to sit in the office, – to work on board ships, so the maritime police seemed the right place. “

What is the maritime police?

It is similar to border control, but we also have police rights. We are mainly engaged in the fight against illegal trade – arms, drugs, human beings. We simply do not leave to inspect the sea borders. We are actively cooperating with the US, Bahamas and Cayman Coast Guard. Also with Britain and its army.
