Helme spoke of the resignation a day after his scandals in a radio broadcast in which he questioned the fairness of the US presidential election caused a scandal.

Announcing his resignation, Helme said he had decided to leave the post of minister because the media was slandering him.

As Helme explained at a press conference in the Estonian Parliament, he made this decision in connection with the “campaign of lies and slander in the Estonian media”.

“Last night, looking at the lies and slanders spread by the Estonian media, I decided to submit a resignation article,” he said. “The reason is very simple – no one will stop my mouth. I say what I think is right, what I have in my heart. To tell the truth – it is more important than the post of Minister,” said the Vice-President of EKRE.

Helme also added that he did not want to jeopardize the referendum on the definition of marriage initiated by EKRE, which would ask voters whether to include in the Estonian constitution a definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

He stated that he would continue to work as a member of parliament.
