Estonia temporarily bans flights near the Russian border

The temporary flight restrictions are related to the strengthening of the border between Estonia and Russia. Currently, there are about 25 km of the border on the Estonian side.

Estonia will close from 19 to 26 November the possibility of flights near the eastern and southeastern borders. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the country’s transport department.

It is noted that the temporary restriction of flights is associated with the strengthening of the border between Estonia and Russia.

Earlier in Estonia, it was announced that the exercises of the Defense Forces reservists were held in connection with the events on the border of Belarus and the EU, to which about 1.7 thousand people would be attracted. Their main task will be to erect 40 km of temporary barriers on the border with Russia in areas where the likelihood of illegal crossing is most likely.

It is reported that at present, about 25 km of the border have been equipped on the Estonian side, work is underway on the next section, 39.5 km long. Another 40 km of temporary barriers to be erected during the gathering will allow for a total of more than 100 km of a physically developed border.

The construction of the border with Russia should be completed by 2026. The total length of the Estonian-Russian border line is 338 km, of which 76 km pass along the Narva River and 127 km along Lake Peipsi. The 135 km long land border runs mainly through difficult terrain and in forest areas, where nature itself serves as a natural barrier for violators, and therefore it is really necessary to build a border infrastructure for 115 km.

It is noted that the onshore section will be provided with high-tech equipment. Drones will be used at the border; any crossing will be recorded by sensors. The construction of a fence with a height of 2.5 m for about 90 km will also be completed.
