Essentially virtual gay pride for its fiftieth anniversary

Fifty years after the first Gay Pride in New York, the LGBT community essentially came online on Saturday due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A few small demonstrations marked this anniversary, but most of it was gathered under the label of Global Pride, a 24-hour virtual demonstration.

One of the main events on the Gay Pride calendar was also one of the first victims. For the occasion, the watchword of the day was ‘postponed, but still united’.

A small group of fifteen people, including Peter Tatchell, a veteran of the movement, carefully masked in rainbow colors, still found themselves on the streets to celebrate the creation 50 years ago, of the London Gay Liberation Front.

‘We want to re-make this event an event for the’ human rights ‘of the LGBT community’, insisted the activist, now 68 years old, as the Gay Pride parades have become business opportunities for gay businesses .

Berlin and Vienna

Some protests were broadcast on a giant screen in Piccadilly Square, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted his support.

Police in Berlin estimated that some 3,500 people paraded in temperatures close to 30 degrees, and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted support for LGBT people around the world: ‘Be proud of yourself! No matter who you love, no matter where you live. ‘

In Vienna, some 200 cars and motorcycles decorated with rainbow banners or inflatable unicorns paraded on the famous Ring. According to the organizers, around 5000 spectators welcomed the procession, a lighter version of the annual parade which usually brings together several hundred thousand people.

Online, the global event Global Pride, whose slogan was ‘Exist, persist, resist’ had started at 5:00 GMT (07:00 in Switzerland) in London.

‘Particularly moving this year’

In the United States, former President Barack Obama had sent a video message paying tribute to the customers of the New York bar Stonewall Inn who rebelled in 1969 against yet another descent of the police, de facto launching the contemporary movement for rights homosexuals.

‘Thanks to the movement they launched and the decades of work that followed, same-sex marriage became legal in the country five years ago, and not later that month the Supreme Court decided that an employer could not discriminate against LGBTQ employees, ” he said.

Democratic November presidential candidate Joe Biden also made reference to the Supreme Court, saying the celebration was “particularly moving this year”.

In Argentina, public buildings and monuments were to be lit in the colors of the rainbow, and activists organized a week of online celebrations, although Gay Pride is usually celebrated in November in this country.
