ESA Launches Live Broadcast of Mars Surface to Celebrate Mars Express Mission’s 20th Anniversary

No human has ever set foot on Mars, although hopes continue to be made that they will do so in the near future.

But now, for the first time, we can see Mars directly, as the European Space Agency “ESA” launched a live broadcast on YouTube of the surface of the Red Planet.

Mars was previously seen only through snapshots or pictures published several days after it was taken.

The live broadcast comes within the framework of celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the launch of the “Mars Express” mission to capture three-dimensional images of the surface of the Red Planet.

Mars Express is a space exploration mission of the European Space Agency.

The British newspaper, “Daily Mail”, said that experts spent several weeks developing tools that would allow the images from the probe’s camera to be transmitted directly and for a full hour.

Hours before the live broadcast was launched, James Godfrey, director of spacecraft operations at the European Space Agency, said: “This hasn’t been tried before and to be honest, we’re not 100 percent sure it will work, but I’m very optimistic.”

He added, “Usually, we see pictures from Mars and we know that they were taken a few days ago.”
