Ericsson is being the largest supplier of antennas

5G will begin to take shape in the Movistar and Orange networks in the coming months. Orange will launch it in September, while Movistar It will launch it at the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021 depending on when it manages to guarantee 50% deployment in Spain.

Ericsson, present in almost all the new pilot tests of Telefónica

Currently, both operators are conducting pilot tests, and in the case of Ericsson, the company has become Telefónica’s main partner for its pilots and use cases. This is a first step to consolidate itself as its main supplier of network equipment for the deployment of its commercial network, thus ahead of Nokia and Huawei.

Yesterday, Telefónica announced its next 5G projects in the Community of Madrid with the initiative “Telefónica 5G Madrid ”, where it has been awarded by Red.es after the call made by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, with aid valued at 2.5 million euros, of which 900,000 come from FEDER funds.

The first aid granted by Red.es was in May 2019, where the operator launched eight use cases in Galicia to test the different capabilities of the 5G NSA y SA in terms of speed and latency, as well as other improvements that the technology offers.

Eight new use cases

In total, the initiative has eight use cases. Among them we find one for air traffic control with drones in urban areas, which will have the support of the Post Office. We also find remote production of TV content, virtual reality to carry out remote rehabilitation for multiple sclerosis patients at Hospital de la Princesa, a private network with 5G in the El Corte Inglés logistics center to optimize its warehouses, 5G coverage in networks differentiated within a hotel of the Melià chain, education with VR, and holographic meetings.

In the published press release we find a Ericsson’s significant presence and other companies like Intel, while we don’t see any mention of Huawei or Nokia.

Telefónica will also lead another 13 use cases in Andalusia and will support eight pilots in Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha. Since January 2018, Telefónica has participated in more than 60 5G use cases. These projects are in addition to the tests that the operator has been doing for more than two years in Segovia, where they chose Nokia for the network equipment, and in Talavera de la Reina, where they chose Ericsson. Thus, although Telefónica wants to have several equipment suppliers, Ericsson is on its way to being the one with the largest presence in the operator’s network.
