Erick Gives Leaks to the Vice President about Merger 3 of BUMN Sharia Banks

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister Erick Thohir visited Vice President Ma’ruf Amin to report on the plan to develop a sharia bank, which is the result of the merger of three state-owned Islamic banks. During the meeting, it was announced that the bank would focus on corporate customers.

Not alone, Erick also invited Hery Gunardi, who is currently the President Director of Bank Syariah Mandiri, which has also acted as the Project Management Office (PMO) for the merger of Islamic banks since March 2020.

“Alhamdulillah, I received a lot of input and suggestions when holding a meeting with the Vice President @kyai_marufamin to report the work plan for the merger of Sharia Banks together with the Managing Director of Sharia Bank Himbara. Hopefully this plan will run well and God willing, it can strengthen Indonesia’s Islamic economy, prosper the people and of course the people Muslims in Indonesia, “wrote Erick on his personal Instagram account @erickthohir, Tuesday (11/24/2020).

Spokesperson for the Vice President Masduki Baidlowi said at the meeting it was also conveyed that the bank was committed to not reducing employees. Other obstacles have also been anticipated by the team at various stages.

The merged bank is planned to start operating in February 2021 and is targeted to attract corporate customers and raise funds to the global market. The target is to enter financial markets in the Middle East and bring funds from these countries to Indonesia.

“This means that it is hoped that both national and international corporations that have been oriented towards conventional financing through conventional banks can also take advantage of Islamic banks,” Masduki said in his official statement.

However, this bank with assets of up to Rp 220 trillion is also expected to be able to support microfinance by strengthening micro waqf banks. This is a direct concern of the Vice President.

According to him, Ma’ruf hopes that this micro waqf bank can find a business model so that in the future this bank can also become big.

To that end, the Minister of BUMN has ordered the President Director of Bank Syariah Mandiri to form a team of four or five people to find and explore the best business model. As a first step, the President Director of Bank Syariah Mandiri and his team will visit Islamic boarding schools that have micro waqf banks.

In addition, in the future, it is hoped that the development of this micro waqf bank can also be assisted in its development using APBN funds.

“But of course with the principle of prudence, what kind of management must be reviewed, then what kind of pesantren will the micro waqf bank develop. I think studies should be carried out for readiness so that it really develops, so that it does not become the funds that were once handed over to a pesantren were lost, “he explained.
