Erdogan announces the discovery of the largest ever natural gas reserves

Erdogan said 320 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves were found at the site where the Turkish ship Fatih began exploration last month, and expressed hope that Turkish consumers would receive the first gas in 2023, the century of modern Turkey.

“Turkey has made the largest natural gas discovery in the history of the Black Sea,” Erdogan said. “My Lord has opened the door for us to unprecedented wealth.”

The Turkish ship Fatih has found natural gas reserves in the Tuna-1 field off the coast of Eregli after exploration began on July 20, Erdogan said, hoping new gas reserves would be found in the region.

Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albairak said the natural gas found would help reduce the growing current account deficit by reducing the country’s high annual energy import costs.
